Practical guide
How to estimate the real cost of a road trip
A useful trip budget is more than fuel price multiplied by distance. This guide separates fuel, tolls and shared costs so you can compare routes and decide what each traveler should pay.
Start with total distance
Decide whether your distance is one way or round trip. If the route is 180 miles each way, the round-trip distance is 360 miles. Mixing one-way distance with round-trip tolls is one of the easiest ways to underestimate a trip.
Fuel cost using MPG
For a vehicle that averages 30 MPG over 360 miles, estimated fuel use is 360 ÷ 30 = 12 gallons. At $3.60 per gallon, fuel cost is 12 × $3.60 = $43.20.
Fuel cost using L/100 km
For a 500 km trip in a car that uses 7.2 L/100 km, fuel needed is 500 × 7.2 ÷ 100 = 36 liters. At 1.70 per liter, the fuel portion is 61.20 in the selected currency.
Add tolls and route charges separately
Tolls are fixed route costs rather than fuel costs. Add the expected tolls for each direction. If an alternative route avoids tolls but adds distance, compare both total costs rather than looking at tolls alone.
Cost per person
After adding fuel and tolls, divide by the number of people who are sharing those costs. If fuel is $43.20 and tolls are $16, the total is $59.20. Shared by four people, that is $14.80 each.
What this estimate does not include automatically
Depending on the trip, you may also want to budget parking, ferries, rental fees, accommodation, meals, insurance or vehicle wear. These are real costs, but separating them from fuel and tolls keeps the calculation transparent.
Why real fuel use can differ
Published fuel economy is an estimate. Speed, traffic, hills, weather, tire pressure, load and air conditioning can change actual consumption. If you know your own recent fuel economy, use that value instead of a generic specification.
Compare scenarios before leaving
Use the Trip Cost Calculator to compare miles/MPG or kilometers/L/100 km, add tolls, and split the result between passengers. Changing one input at a time makes route and car comparisons easier to understand.
