Calculate and understand the average
The arithmetic mean represents an equal distribution of the total. The median is the middle value after sorting and may describe lists with extreme values more clearly.
How to calculate the arithmetic mean
Add every value and divide the sum by the number of values. For 12, 18, 14, 20, and 16, the sum is 80 and there are five values: 80 ÷ 5 = 16.
The center of the ordered list
When there is an even number of values, the two central numbers are averaged to obtain the median.
