Average calculator

Find the average of a list of numbers instantly. Paste values separated by commas, spaces or new lines to get the mean, median, mode, sum and range, with the calculation shown. No signup needed.

Separate numbers with commas, spaces, semicolons or new lines. Use a decimal point: 5.5, 7, 8.25. Enter 1000 without a thousands separator.

Calculate an average in seconds

The arithmetic mean is the sum of all values divided by how many values there are. For two numbers, add them and divide by 2. For a longer list, the same rule applies. The median is the middle value after sorting and can be more useful when the list contains unusually high or low values.

How to calculate the average of numbers

Add every value and divide the total by the number of values. For 12, 18, 14, 20, and 16, the sum is 80 and there are five values: 80 ÷ 5 = 16. For just two numbers, such as 10 and 14, the average is (10 + 14) ÷ 2 = 12.

Mean

Every number is included

Each value contributes to the sum, so changing any number changes the arithmetic mean.

Median

The center of the ordered list

When there is an even number of values, the two central numbers are averaged to obtain the median.

Try an average calculation

Two numbers

The average of 10 and 14 is 12

Add the numbers: 10 + 14 = 24. Divide by 2: 24 ÷ 2 = 12.

Repeated values

Compare mean, median and mode

For 2, 4, 4, 6 and 9, the mean is 5, the median is 4 and the mode is 4. Each describes a different feature of the list.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mode of a list?

The mode is the most frequent value. If several values share the highest frequency, this calculator shows each of them. If no value repeats, it displays “No mode”.

Are average and mean the same?

In everyday use, average usually means arithmetic mean: the sum of all values divided by the number of values.

How can I calculate an average online?

Type or paste two or more numbers into the input. The calculator adds them, counts them, and displays the mean automatically.

How do I find the average of two numbers?

Add the two numbers and divide the result by 2. For example, the average of 10 and 14 is 12.

Can I paste decimal values?

Yes. Use a decimal point and separate numbers with commas, semicolons, spaces or line breaks. For example, 5.5, 7, 8.25. Commas separate values; they are not decimal or thousands separators.

What is the difference between mean and median?

The mean uses every value. The median uses the center of the ordered list and is less affected by extremes.

Does this calculate a weighted average?

No. Every value has the same weight. A weighted average assigns a different importance to each value.

When the average can mislead

A mean is useful, but it is not always a complete description of a list. A single unusually high or low value can move the mean substantially. Compare it with the median and range before treating the mean as a “typical” value.
